On the 9th of September attacks, 19 militants carried out a series of hijackings and suicide bombings. They were affiliated with the notorious Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda. 9/11, 2001, was the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil in history. Let's review some of the facts.

Nineteen al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four passenger planes and purposely crashed two into the South and North Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. They directed a third into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The twin towers in NYC eventually collapsed due to impact and fire damage. After learning of other attacks, the passengers of Flight 93, the fourth plane, resisted and fought the hijackers. The aircraft crashed in vacant forest land in western Pennsylvania, 20 minutes before arriving in Washington, D.C.

The hijackers and Muslim terrorists who participated in the attacks were from Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries. Osama Bin Laden founded and financed the Saudi-sponsored al-Qaeda terrorist organization. The terrorist believed they acted in retaliation for U.S. support for Israel, the U.S. involvement in the Persian Gulf War, and its continued military presence in the Middle East.

The attacks were reported by the media and governments around the world. Many nations supported and declared themselves pro-Americans. Leaders of most Middle Eastern countries, as well as Libya and Afghanistan, condemned the attacks. Iraq is a significant exception, saying that "American cowboys are reaping the rewards for their crimes against humanity.

Immediately following the attacks, many people worldwide created memorials and ceremonies to commemorate the victims. Photographs of the missing victims were displayed at the site where once were the Twin Towers, now called ground Ground Zero.
