Watching videos on YouTube is free, and there is a good chance you have used YouTube before. This platform is the second most popular search engine behind Google, thanks to its user-friendliness and its growing popularity of video content. YouTube was created by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim on February 14, 2005. It was developed in Hurley’s garage to allow anyone to post any video content they wanted. Users were expected to be able to upload, distribute, and watch content without limitations on the site.
The very first video posted on the website is an 18-seconds long video entitled "Me at the Zoo". It shows one of the co-founders, Karim, discussing elephant trunks at the San Diego Zoo.
In September 2005, YouTube had surpassed one million views on its first video. This was a Nike commercial that went viral, and it was a video of Ronaldinho, a Brazilian soccer player, receiving a pair of Golden Boots. Nike was also one of the first major corporations to see the promotional possibilities of YouTube.
In October 2006, Google bought YouTube for $1.65 billion. YouTube was dubbed "the next step in the evolution of the Internet" by Google at the time. One of the main reasons Google bought YouTube was to enter the video-sharing market. And in recent years, video marketing has become extremely powerful.
Many content creators nowadays make a reasonable profit by selling commercial ad space before or during the creation of videos that they then submit to the site. Many people can make a living as YouTubers thanks to programs like YouTube's Partner Program and Google's AdSense.
A social media platform is an online service that allows users to engage with one another while sharing information or interests. In that sense, we can consider YouTube as a social media because it has subscriptions, comments, likes, community posts, and the ability to share information with a wide audience. Its content is also user-generated, meaning, users can upload their videos and anyone can view them.
At this moment YouTube remains one of the most well-known and widely used video-sharing sites on the Internet. Every month, more than 4 billion hours of video content are viewed on YouTube, with an estimated 500 hours of video content being posted every minute.
