Life is full of surprising and unexpected things and events. It can be minor occurrences such as your coffee spilled on your table, an unplanned hang out with friends, or a delayed flight. It can also be a major or life-altering occurrence that causes challenges and troubles such as a loss of job, loss of money or possession, or sickness or death of someone you love. These situations can sometimes cause anxiety and stress, which has an impact on our mind, mood, and behavior. We have no control over these uncertainties, but we have the power over how we respond to them. Today we will understand more about unexpected situations in life and how to deal with them.

Change is an inevitable aspect of life. One important way to deal with unexpected things is by acknowledging that these are all part of life. When you embrace this reality, it will be simpler for you to deal with whatever life brings.

Coronavirus significantly impacted numerous industries such as travel, hospitality, casino, gaming, and leisure. A lot of companies were forced to reduce their workforce for cost-cutting measures. According to Wells (2020), COVID-19 was predicted and foreseen, but we did not expect its timing and manifestation. And so we now live in the age of "foreseeable unexpected events."

An example of an unexpected situation in life is unemployment or sudden loss of income. Being unable to receive your normal paycheck causes stress and we can’t deny the fact that we need money to survive. This pushes you to reduce your expenses and ask for help from other people. But one way we can deal with this is to always expect the unexpected. We will elaborate on this in the next paragraph.

We can't plan for everything, but you can attempt to stay prepared in case something unexpected happens. Let me give you an example, the pandemic caused a company to lay off employees and among those who were laid off were Josh and Paul. Their source of income was cut off. Josh has 6 months' worth of emergency funds, and because of that, he was able to survive until he found another job. While Paul who doesn’t have an emergency fund was buried in debt. Josh did a great move to prepare and save money for unexpected events like this.

As of October 03, 2021, 04:08 GMT, 4,811,637 people have died as a result of the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. During these times, you may not be able to be with a loved one when they die or to grieve with friends and relatives in person because of restrictions on the size of in-person gatherings,  social distancing, and stay-at-home orders. Grief is a natural reaction to loss, whether it occurs during or after a disaster or other terrible event. It can occur as a result of a death, as well as severe changes in everyday routines and ways of life that normally provide us with comfort and a sense of security.

The death of a loved one is another unexpected situation, and the only thing you can do is to process and deal with the pain. You will be in denial at first due to shock, but you will also experience anger and sadness until you are able to fully accept the loss. However, people come and go, and as soon as you start remembering all of the wonderful moments and great experiences you shared with this person, you begin to adjust and it becomes easier to move forward.

In uncertain events, having an optimistic attitude is an asset. It's crucial to keep in mind that not all unexpected events are negative. Sometimes problems and disasters are a blessing in disguise. For example, being fired from a job could turn out great in the long run as you may be able to evaluate yourself and find a better and more fulfilling path in life. A setback or failure can prompt you to look for something better and this awakens ambition, motivation, and persistence, leading to progress and achievement.
