Writing your first letters, coloring and playing with other children, are some of the nice memories that most people keep from kindergarten. Elementary or primary school is usually from the 1st to the 6th grade. Most of us usually go to elementary school from age 6 to 11. Some people report that they had a great time and some others that it was just ok. During this age we usually participate in festivals, parades and celebrations.
The World Factbook reports that the U.S. has a literacy rate of 99 percent. Using its definition, literacy refers to the percentage of people aged 15 or older who can read and write. In California, parents whose kids miss any more than 10 percent of their classes can be charged with a misdemeanor, slammed with a $2,000 fine or get a year-long jail sentence if, after being offered state support and counseling, their kids still fail to improve their attendance.
During middle school most of us are between 11 and 14 years old. This is the time when we start puberty and there is a very different atmosphere at school. During this period, many people remember sports events and competitions, as well as having their first crush or romantic relationship.
“High school can be one of the best times of your life”, said my father, and I had a hard time believing him. But then I enrolled in high school and I loved it. High school is the time when we are between 15 and 18 years old. And the movie Grease, which was released in June 1978, tells the story of Rydell High seniors Danny Zuko (John Travolta) and Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) as the pair falls in love in the 1950s. The movie features classic soundtracks like “You’re the One That I Want” and “Summer Nights.”
In Mexico, there are both public and private institutions of higher education. Higher education usually follows the US education model with a 4-year bachelor's degree, also known as undergraduate level (Licenciatura). Then there are two degrees at the postgraduate level. The 2-year Master's degree (Maestría), and the 3-year Doctoral degree (Doctorado), followed by the highest doctorate of Doctor of Sciences (Doctor en Ciencias). This structure of education conforms very closely to the Bologna Process started in Europe in 1999, allowing Mexican students to study abroad.
Students entering college in the US could pay more than $190,000 for a bachelor's degree. Is higher education affordable or expensive in your country?
