Minimalism

Through the years people have tried to adopt new ways of life that help them to develop emotional well-being.  Minimalism has managed to position itself as one of these transcendental philosophies. In the arts, minimalism is to achieve expression with only a few elements. As a philosophy of life it’s called existential minimalism and it refers to a simple way of life. It means to eliminate extravagances, excessive material possessions, and lean towards simplicity and moderation in all aspects of your life. Let’s take a closer look at this way of living.

We are in a world where most cultures are based on consumerism. Stores have spaces packed with merchandise with juicy offers that lead people to purchase and accumulate more and more goods. Things that very often are  unnecessary. Material possessions do not fill the void. They don’t bring happiness. Minimalism says use things and love people, never the other way around.

Minimalism states that material possessions are not the basis of happiness and that you can be much happier when you take care of and give more importance to personal relationships you have with your family and friends and with your environment than when you live for buying and accumulating more and more things.

Here are some ways to practice minimalism. Focus on simplicity. Simplicity is one of the bases of minimalism, not sticking to material things and having what is necessary is key to starting this lifestyle. Analyze your priorities and ask yourself the question: Do I need this or not? That way you will give away, or discard, many things. It is difficult at first, but with less material possessions you’ll feel more free, less worried and you’d live better.

Balance your finances. Minimalism includes balancing your expenses, and the money you spend on buying things. Manage your economy to avoid falling into excesses, invest more in the people you love and less in obtaining material possessions.

Organize all your spaces. Organizing spaces includes decluttering your home and your work area. Decluttering means to get rid of unnecessary objects. Minimalist spaces are usually characterized by having a lot of light and only a few objects, this brings emotional well-being to people who practice this lifestyle.

Some people criticize minimalism as a way of bad conformism. Minimalists say we have to be grateful for everything that has come into our lives, because, in some way, our possessions, friends and family fulfill a purpose and teach us something. It is an emotional connection with the material world, other humans and the environment. You can finally feel complete and that you don’t need anything other than the necessary possessions to be happy.

The here and now are important. Living in the present is everything, because unlike the past and the future that are uncertain, staying in the here and now does not generate anxiety. Being here and now allows you to enjoy every aspect of your life in the exact moment when it is happening. That includes your physical spaces, the people you interact with, and your day-to-day experiences.
