The hallyu, or "Korean wave," began to promote Korean culture over the world in the 1990s. To increase the country's income, the Korean government began to invest in dramas, resulting in more jobs, primarily in the artistic sector, as well as attracting tourists to the country. K-dramas is a short term for dramas produced by South Korea.
K-dramas gained popularity in the West throughout the 2010s, thanks to streaming platforms like Rakuten Viki and DramaFever, which allow viewers to legally watch Korean material online with English subtitles. These platforms also established distribution partnerships with Netflix and Hulu, allowing them to reach even more people.
One film that gained attention is “Crash Landing on You”, starring Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin, which revolves around the love story of a North Korean army officer and a South Korean heiress. Between March 21 and March 27, 2020, this blockbuster rom-com remained in the top 10 in Japan for a total of 229 days and was the sixth most-watched TV show on Netflix in the United States.
Viewers also fell in love with It's Okay to Not Be Okay, which entered in the top 10 on Netflix in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Nigeria, and Russia, as well as in a number of Latin American and Asian nations last year.
Another is Sweet Home, an apocalyptic horror South Korean television series, had 22 million Netflix subscribers in its first four weeks and was ranked #3 in the US and internationally shortly after its release in 2020. This 2021, Netflix has invested over 600 million dollars on Korean works, and the shows are now regularly broadcast on its social media platforms.
One reason why K-Dramas are popular is because of their unique and creative plot twists. The audience is usually curious as to who is in a relationship with whom and how they are related. The show's central mystery is always intriguing. A wide range of genres such as melodramas, historical dramas, fantasy, science fiction, action, rom-coms, horror and suspense are all featured in K-dramas.
Koreans are not only creative when it comes to dramas, but on regular films as well. For example, Parasite, a 2019 film, took four awards at the 92nd Academy Awards, namely Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film, making it the first non-English language film to win Best Picture.
