Very recently the Olympic Games were held in Tokyo, Japan’s capital. Due to the critical moment the world is going through with the Covid-19 pandemic, the Olympic games were postponed one year. But there was a happy ending when Japan made a huge effort to make them happen in 2021. Today we are going to explore Japanese culture along with how they dealt with organizing the Olympic Games in the middle of a terrible pandemic.

It was March 2020 when the prestigious newspaper The New York Times published the news. Even after resistance from athletes, from sports federations, from national Olympic committees, from health experts, Japan formally postponed the Olympic Games, which had been scheduled to begin in late July 2020, until 2021.

Then on July 23, 2021 Japan started the Olympic Games even when some
Japanese people were against them. The Japanese government decided to
implement the following measures to reduce the possibility of Covid spreading. Olympic athletes and staff were tested everyday. About 80 % of participating athletes had already been vaccinated. There were nos pectators allowed.

The Olympic games committee approved five sports — baseball/softball, karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing. These are popular sports that are practiced all over the world and that if approved they officially become part of the event.

The country with the most gold and overall medals was the US; China and Japan followed closely.

Michael Phelps: The man who dominated the Olympic pool like no other.
The legendary American swimmer won 28 medals across five Olympics, making him the most decorated athlete in the history of the Summer Games.

Baron Pierre de Coubertin presented the idea in 1894 to revive the Olympic Games that had been held more than 1500 years in the past in Greece. Pierre de Coubertin was a French native and wanted to have the Olympic Games to be held in Paris starting in the year 1900 but when he told his ideas to a committee of 34 countries, they got so excited that they decided to have the first Olympic Games of the new era in 1896 in Athens, Greece.

Sports are fun ways to exercise. Humans need exercise during childhood to develop a healthy body and mind. Then as adults it helps us keep low levels of glucose and to eliminate excessive fat. All the way to our later years people who exercise report more mobility, vitality and energy.
