Fruits We Thought Were Vegetables Sep 13th

Introduction

There are many fruits in the plant kingdom that are frequently misidentified as vegetables because chefs use them in the kitchen to complement the food they prepare for dinner. Culinary artists (chefs)
and nutritionists tend to classify foods depending on their flavor types and how they can mix them and integrate them in recipes. Tomatoes are probably the best-known example of fruit often mistaken for a vegetable because it is used as a base for many popular main course dishes. Today we will talk about four more fruits we thought were vegetables.

Botanically or scientifically speaking, a fruit is a seed-bearing component of a plant that develops from the ovary of a flowering plant, therefore, anything you eat that has seeds in it is actually a fruit. Whereas vegetables consist of the plant's roots, leaves, and stems.

In the culinary world, fruits and vegetables are categorized based on their taste. Fruits have a sweet or tart flavor that can be used in desserts, snacks, and juices. While vegetables have a milder or savory flavor profile and are typically served as a side dish or main course.

Pumpkin and squash. They contain seeds and have a sweetish flavor, similar to other fruits. It has an earthy flavor and is often prepared and eaten as a vegetable, but can also be used in sweet dishes such as pies.

Cucumber is refreshing, crisp, and cool. One of the most widely consumed items in the world. Can you tell now the cucumber is a vegetable or a fruit? Even though we put this food in our raw vegetable salad together with tomatoes, remember that this is a fruit.

String Beans. It's easy to be fooled by appearances. Although they are green (or yellow), this does not necessarily imply that they are vegetables.

Eggplants. Eggplants, also known as aubergines, are nightshade plants that are used in a variety of dishes all over the world. They can be red, green, or even black and are actually classified as berries.

More fruits are misidentified as vegetables such as pepper, corn, peas, okra, olives, and zucchinis. But remember you are not wrong when you label them as vegetables because it depends on the context. Whether from a botanic or a culinary perspective, they are still the nutritious foods that we eat and consume.
