Every day, we are faced with hundreds of options, ranging from choosing between several online recipes for dinner, to more complex decisions involving our emotional, financial, and physical wellbeing. When you are highly stressed because of the infinite number of decisions you have to make throughout the day, then, you may be experiencing decision fatigue. This situation can eventually sap your ability to make great decisions. Let’s talk more about this.

According to Medical News Today, decision fatigue is a psychological phenomenon surrounding a person’s ability or capacity to determine what they want. This situation shows that, the more we make decisions over a long time, the more our brain gets tired.

For some situations, such as deciding what classes to take in college or planning your next vacation. One reason why we spend too much time deciding is that we are not brave enough to take risks and explore options and this may be linked to the fear of uncertainty.

One way to handle decision fatigue is to prioritize the most complex and time-consuming jobs. Focus on difficult things first when you have the most energy, which for many of us is in the morning. So that later in the day, when your energy levels start to decrease, you will just be dealing with the simpler things.

It is also important to practice self-care. This one plays an important role when it comes to making informed decisions. You can lower your stress level by making sure you are getting enough sleep, getting the right amount of nutrition from your food, and taking short breaks during work to declutter your mind.

Another way to manage decision fatigue is to remove distractions. When you choose to participate in activities that take your focus away from your work, you are only making your mind more tired. Avoid gazing at your cell phone, surfing on social media, or watching TV.

Simplifying things may also be helpful because you don’t spend too much time on small decisions. For example, wear similar outfits every day instead of stressing out about choosing different styles. Another is to set days for eating out, cook food in the comfort of your home during weekdays, and only eat at a restaurant during weekends.

It is our choices ... that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities. — J. K. Rowling.
