The large part of the city that has a perfect grid-like pattern is the Eixample district. It is one of Barcelona’s trendiest neighborhoods and home to the towering art nouveau basilica Sagrada Familía, and rippled-stone mansion Casa Milà.

What is the most interesting building design that you have ever seen?

Eixample means “expansion.” It is indeed an expansion and an important urban transformation in Barcelona. Here is the story: Barcelona was once a walled city in the 19th century. Small towns were just scattered, streets were randomly arranged, and traveling around was not so good.

Why is urban planning important? How does it affect quality of life?

Soon, the population density outgrew the bounds of the city's ancient walls. And this  led to poor working conditions, uncontrollable sewage, and dirty water, bringing cholera epidemics and riots. Finally, the Spanish government granted permission to demolish the wall and so the construction of the new Barcelona began.

Do you think the setting of the city where you live is good and organized? What do you want to improve in your city?

Eixample was designed by Ildefons Cerdà, an urban planner and engineer. He aimed to create a humane city that provides comfort and equality to all citizens, regardless of social class. He wants a clean, healthy, and well-connected urban area.

Many modern cities around the world are building smart green buildings that are friendly with the environment. What would you like to see buildings be able to do in the future?

City blocks are actually octagons (rectangles with the corners cut off), and they are orientated NW-SE to ensure all apartments are exposed to natural light during the day. The details would also allow for green spaces, better ventilation, visibility, and access to transportation and marketplaces.

There are many types of houses (underground, eco-friendly, rural, apartment). What kind of house would be your ideal house?

The Eixample district is definitely the epitome of brilliant architecture and perfect urbanism. While Barcelona as a whole is perhaps another romantic city like Paris. According to Statistica, nearly 5.7 million people live in Barcelona. How lucky they are to live there!

Which one do you like most, Barcelona or Paris? Share your next vacation plans.
