However, this challenge may highlight our resilience and teach our children how to make the best of even the most terrible situations. According to the 2020 US Census Bureau Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), parents spend more time with their children eating, reading, and playing from March-June 2020. The time when many parts of the world were under lockdown. Today, let’s share our knowledge about the family impact of the pandemic.

First, we have to understand that the survey's respondents were categorized into two. 1.) The reference parent — usually the mother, and 2.) The other parent — usually the spouse or cohabiting partner of the reference parent. The findings are based on interviews with 1 parent from each of 22,000 families in the US during the first four months of the pandemic.

What are the negative and positive impacts of the pandemic on your family?

The survey showed that from 2018 to 2020, meals shared by reference parents with their kids went 84% to 85%. While meals shared by other parents with their kids went 56% to 63%. Also, 64% of parents or relatives read to their children more frequently than in previous years.

Did your family often eat meals together when you were growing up? How does it feel?

Inversely, travel restrictions and lockdowns, declined the percentage of parents taking their young children on outings two or more times a week from 87% in 2019 to 82% in 2020. That concludes fewer outings but more shared dinners and readings together.

What were your favorite family outings as a kid? 

Increased quality family time has been one of the blessings of the lockdown. But we can’t deny the fact that the pandemic is still negatively affecting us. Families can incorporate a variety of activities such as planning calendars, screen usage, and social connections to reduce stress, be productive, and create meaningful family moments.

How do you and your family deal in this trying time? What is your family dynamic now?

Parents may find it tough to keep their children on track or assist them with schoolwork, especially if they have other duties. But you should establish a routine that includes educational programs, playtime, and other activities to take advantage of the time you have to spend together. Setting goals and celebrating accomplishments gives motivation to children.

What do you think are parents’ experiences and struggles in this pandemic?

Children’s emotional well-being improves when parents assure their kids that they are there for them. Give them more hugs and say "I love you." Take mindful pauses and slowdowns throughout the day to maintain better mental health and feel calmer when things become overwhelming.

What are some ways you can help your children manage their emotions and behavior?
