Introduction

From birth until death, each and everyone of us has basic rights and freedoms protected by the law, regardless of nationality, sex, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, language, or any other status. These are collectively known as human rights, necessary to protect and preserve each person's humanity, allowing us to live lives with dignity as human beings. Simply put, we are moral and spiritual beings. We value fairness, dignity, equality, respect, and independence.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) published by the United Nations on December 10, 1948, became the most important document for everyone as it serves as the standard list of rights and freedoms everyone is entitled to. Back then, only people who were members of particular groups had rights. 

What human rights do you think are most abused in today's society?

In 539 B.C.E., Cyrus the Great (1st king of ancient Persia) with his armies conquered Babylon, surprisingly freed all slaves, and gave everyone the opportunity to choose their own religion. His declarations were recorded in a clay tablet called ‘The Cyrus Cylinder,' and is considered as the world's earliest human rights charter. Human rights evolve through time.

Following World War II, governments agreed to form the United Nations, with the primary purpose of maintaining international peace and avoiding conflict. As a result, the Commission on Human Rights was established, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was published in order to promote universal respect for human rights.

Do you think violence is still prevalent in today’s society? What can we do about it? 

In many parts of the world, people's rights are still being stripped away. Every day in our communities, we continue to fight for freedom from discrimination and the right to a fair trial. Human trafficking, refugee crises, worker rights, and LGBTQ+ rights are more human rights issues we still face today.

Social movements, parades, and marches are a powerful, peaceful way to bring about social change. If you were given a chance to participate, what would you have been marching for?

The Covid-19 pandemic for example caused attacks and racial discrimination on people of Asian descent. It also worsened poverty and inequality in the US, affecting Black, Latin, and Native communities. Some governments used the situation as an excuse to impose severe limits on press freedom, threaten the work of journalists, and the freedom of the people to access information.

Is the government’s continued failure to ensure an adequate response in this pandemic a serious human rights issue?

According to the Best Countries report, the countries that care the most about human rights in 2021 are Canada, Denmark, and Sweden. The 76th UN General Assembly identified situation of concern in some countries with specific human rights abuse, this includes Afghanistan, Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Syria, and Myanmar.
