Diet And Nutrition Jan 31st

Introduction

Foods and drinks give you the energy and nutrients you need to stay healthy, and manage and reduce the risk of disease. The World Health Organization, (WHO) recommends that you eat lots of vegetables and fruits to maintain a healthy diet since they are good sources of vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, plant protein, and antioxidants. Eat less fat since too much fat, especially the bad kinds, such as saturated and industrially generated trans-fat, can raise your risk of heart disease and stroke. Lastly, sugar and salt intake should be kept to a minimum. Keep reading as we will talk through diet and nutrition.

The word “diet” comes from the Greek word “diaita,” which means “way of life.” For many people, this word means following an eating plan to improve their physical appearance or to avoid disease. There are many kinds of diets out there for different purposes. For example the low-carb, the whole-food diet, or the low-sugar diet. But for most people a diet simply refers to the types and amounts of food a person consumes.

Having a balanced diet means having enough vitamins, minerals, nutrients, and calories to maintain the optimal-functioning of your body. This reduces your chances of becoming sick, getting infected, being tired, and performing poorly. It is not about not eating pizza, chocolate, or your favorite foods forever. It is about eating the right amount of foods from all main food groups and balancing those not-so-healthy choices with healthier ones.

According to Healthline, the average person requires roughly 2,000 calories per day, but this varies depending on their age, gender, and level of physical activity. For example, males as well as people who often exercise require more calories than females and people who don’t exercise. Fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and lean proteins should mostly be the source of our daily calories.

The Vegan Diet is a popular one for weight loss. This diet is linked to veganism, “a way of living, which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of and cruelty to animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose.” People decide to live a vegan lifestyle not just because of health reasons but for ethical, environmental, and compassionate reasons. They oppose the exploitation of animals that is why they don’t consume any animal products and by-products.

The Paleo Diet, also called the caveman diet advocates eating the same foods that our hunter-gatherer ancestors used to eat. This includes lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds — foods obtained by hunting and gathering. Foods that are not allowed to be eaten are processed foods, grains, legumes, sugar, and dairy products because the Paleo diet’s theory is that modern food systems, production, and processing techniques are harmful to human health while food in its most natural and purest form is the best.

Ketogenic Diet. Ketosis is a metabolic process in which the body burns fat for energy rather than carbohydrates. In that sense, the keto diet's macronutrient distribution is weighted heavily towards fat, with moderate protein and very few carbs. Healthy fats such as those found in avocados, coconuts, Brazil nuts, seeds, oily seafood, and olive oil are usually added to the diet. Although more research is needed, this diet helps control epilepsy, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and even acne.

Intermittent Fasting is a pattern of eating that cycles between periods of fasting and eating. Diets focus on what to eat, intermittent fasting focuses on when to eat. This can be done in a variety of ways. There is the 16/8 approach which entails skipping breakfast and limiting your daily eating time to 8 hours, such as between 1–9 p.m. After that, you must fast for 16 hours. Another is the 5:2 method where you eat normally five days a week and eat one 500–600 calorie meal on two nonconsecutive days.
