Business English is an English language skill that is particularly used in business contexts, such as international trade, commerce, finance, insurance, banking, and other professional settings. With this skill, you will be able to work more efficiently, attract new career opportunities, and form excellent relationships with co-workers and clients. Some vocabulary we will tackle are also called business jargon, words and phrases used by business employees to convey unique ideas and directions.

First is “start-up,” this term is used to describe a brand new business, typically in its first few months or years of operations. I love this term because it represents the journey of a founder’s dream into reality. Despite carrying a significant risk of failure, they can be a place with amazing benefits, innovation, and great opportunities to learn.

Leverage can be used as a noun or verb. It may mean the exertion of force using a lever, it may also mean to use something to maximum advantage. In business or finance context, it is an investment strategy of using borrowed money, specifically the use of various financial instruments or borrowed capital to increase the potential return of an investment. Businesses leverage themselves by getting loans for expansion.

Drill down as in  "we need to drill down to the finer points." Companies and corporations use this phrase to imply an idea, assignment, project report, or something that requires more investigation. It's frequently used to find the data and trends that can help the company's future ambitions. Similar to the phrases “unpack that” and “peel the onion.”

For a smooth functioning business, getting your team on the same page and making sure everyone knows what's going on is necessary. When you're "on the same page" with someone, you're approaching things from their perspective, with the same agreed-upon assumptions. A workplace that develops a sense of community is more productive and efficient.

Best practice. This refers to a commonly accepted "best way of doing things" in order to obtain the best results. Example: “Engaging with clients on a personal level seems like the company’s best practice for improving sales.” Best practices can continue to evolve as new and better solutions are discovered, or as a result of increased knowledge, new technology, or simply fresh perspectives.

Keep me/her/him/them in the loop. This refers to keeping someone informed or updated about project developments, what happened in meetings, or other important information that is a must to know. Example: “Dave is not in the loop because Mark forgot to tell him our marketing strategy.”
